Material Science

Materials are the essential substances that create most of the stuff. Materials can be human-made like the plastic or natural as the wood. There are approximately 300,000 materials that are known and this number approaches infinity as scientist combine and create materials in different ways. Most materials are categorised under a few big, general categories. Material science can be used to refer to the study of almost every stuff, just about everything you use daily; the dishes you eat from, the shoes you wear, the skateboard or bike you ride, the CDs you listen to, it’s made of different kinds of stuff. Material science entails understanding how different stuff work, how they can be changed and made to work better, how they can be used and the process of creating the entirely new thing.

History of Material Science

In 8000 BC, Cu was first used in Iraq. It was found in rock formations in the metallic state, dug up and shaped to form ornaments and tools. During the same era, the first farming villages emerged. In 5000BC, there was evidence of pottery formation and extracting Cu from its core. The technologies of the two materials are related as the high temperature is a mandatory requirement. During the same era, there was the discovery of gold that was dug up and beaten into various shapes.

Importance of Material Science

Material science is among the many crucial fields of modern engineering and science. Humans have practically exhausted the uses of naturally occurring resources technologically. Even in ancient times, people used material science to develop bronze and iron. Today, to design substances that perform particular tasks we examine materials at an atomic and molecular level. Some materials possess numerous characteristic, and this facilitates their combination in various ways to carry out numerous tasks. Recently, material science is focused on polymers, plastics and ceramics because of their unique atomic and molecular binding. Ceramics can form and bind correctly repeating geometric patterns whereas plastics almost infinite chains of various sizes.Material science facilitates materials selection for manufacturing and design processes of new needed products, of highest attainable quality and performance at the possibly lowest cost. Material science in conjunction with engineering and computer aided manufacturing processes leads to the realisation of most suitable manufacturing processes. With the increased level of living and material requirements, launching of new material groups with better qualities to meet human needs is inevitable. Understanding material science helps in forecasting the future products’ market with the required properties. Also, material science assists in developing new technological processes and advanced analytical processes of manufacturing that are environmental friendly.
